Welcome, everyone! You know the drill by now: sixteen modules corresponding to the weeks of the course divided into four sections: Detroit Changing (Geography and History), Jobs (Industrialization and Deindustrialization), Race (Segregation) and Changing Detroit (How to Play a Positive Role). Each week's module has an explanation page, a pdf file with the readings for the week, an explanation of those readings, and links to other resources for the week as well as any assignments that are launched or due that week. Read all the required reading for that week before the large sections on Monday. If you have any questions email kdk@wayne.edu or call/text 313-744-3535.

The point of this module is just as a repository of other interesting materials. In some weeks we may include additional readings that can help illuminate the content for the week. You do not have to read these but you might find them useful. They will always be indented and specified as supplementary. This week the supplementary readings are about acclimating to college in general and Wayne State in particular.

Learning is what brings us to this place. But what does it mean to learn? Our word ‘learn’ has very old roots (læst) that connect our heads and the soles of our feet. When we learn, we ‘find and follow the track.’ (Etymology Online, 2014). Learning is a journey by which we get ever closer to our goal, a hunt for what is most valuable. The course guide modules will give you specific information about how this course will help you find what you are seeking (and even what you need but are not yet looking for), along with specific policies that you must follow and "how to" guidance for the more difficult tasks.

It is quite common for college students to experience mental health challenges, such as stress, anxiety and depression, that interfere with academic performance and negatively impact daily life. Help is available for any currently enrolled WSU student who is struggling with a mental health difficulty, at WSU Counseling and Psychological Services (http://caps.wayne.edu, 313 577-3398). Other options, for students and nonstudents, include the Counseling and Testing Center, and the Counseling Psychology Training Clinic, in the WSU College of Education (http://coe.wayne.edu/tbf/counseling/center-index.php). Services at all three clinics are free and confidential. Remember that getting help, before stress reaches a crisis point, is a smart and courageous thing to do – for yourself, and for those you care about. Also, know that the WSU Police Department (313 577-2222) has personnel trained to respond sensitively to mental health emergencies at all hours.

Good writing is one of the most important things you can learn in college. The best written work makes a strong argument. The best arguments begin with a coherent thesis statement and proceed in an organized fashion using appropriate argument and evidence, with correct grammar and syntax. At the end of its primary sections, a good argument will revisit the initial argument, but instead of merely restating its thesis, it will show how the thesis has broader implications or connections. We reserve the right to mark your work as if this were a writing class. An abundance of grammatical and usage errors can have a severely negative effect on your grade. If you have questions, see the extremely detailed course rubric for written work. If you are still having difficulty writing well or clearly, ask your instructor for help and information about possible remedies (and do so immediately). Several particularly good former students have given permission for online publication of their work as examples of strong written work to which we link below. If your ambition extends beyond writing correctly to writing well (and we hope it does), the excerpts below offer excellent guidance:

The university defines academic misconduct as any activity that tends to compromise the academic integrity of the institution or undermine the education process. Such activity may result in failure of a specific assignment, an entire course, or, if flagrant, dismissal from Wayne State University. Examples of academic misconduct include: the following:

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU ACCIDENTALLY FAIL TO GIVE CREDIT? Do not let things get that far. If you have any questions or doubts about what to cite, ask about them before you turn in an assignment with questionable or insufficient references. That one step will prevent all citation-related mistakes. Since all the advice you need about avoiding accidents can be obtained in this manual or directly from your instructor, we will regard any citation problems as intentional.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU INTENTIONALLY FAIL TO GIVE CREDIT? You will be caught. The pressure to succeed, lack of time and (sometimes simple laziness) can cause students to make intentional efforts to conceal their sources and avoid thought and effort simply by copying what somebody else has already done. Do not try it. It simply will not work. The written assignments in this course cannot be answered by anything you can buy or copy whole from the internet or from fellow students, and it is now surprisingly easy to identify the sources of plagiarism. Unfortunately, there have been enough attempts (none successful) that assignments are subject to a random screening process involving text-based search engines and the surprisingly discerning services of the university's web-based plagiarism detector.

It is said that “reading is a lost art,” but if so it is one that can be quickly rediscovered and one that returns easily with practice. There are many online guides to how to read at the college level but one of the best is the Dartmouth guide in the link below. Or see the sneaky shortcut version from Swarthmore. In one four-part sentence the secret is “Leave enough time, remove distractions, take notes, and reflect before continuing.”

Learning is most likely to happen when we take in information, transform it to fit our mental maps (and transform those maps to fit the new information) and then express it in a modified form that is truly our own. This is why discussion must follow long periods of listening. It is also the reason why writing should be part of listening. It is a transformative act that makes the learning stick. Taking effective notes not only gives you something to refer back to, but it helps you learn better in the first place. We limit electronics because it gets in the way of more labor-intensive (but therefore better) ways of taking notes. If you haven't learned how to take good notes yet, this would be a good time to start. The links below list resources that will help you learn (or remember) how to improve your note-taking.

The preparation for writing increases considerably with the help of others. Find fellow students who can help you formulate your ideas and read your initial drafts or ask your instructor. As with reading and other preparation, “plan ahead” is easy to say but hard to do. Planning is especially important here because re-writing is one of the most important steps in the writing process. Leave time before the due date so that you step away from your first draft and revisit it afresh. Then attack it, rearrange it, condense it and you will almost invariably get better written work. You can get personalized help at Wayne State’s Academic Success Center, located on the first floor of the Undergraduate Library and the Writing Center, on the second floor of the Undergraduate Library (see the links below for more details). You can find on-line guides to writing in the English language produced by the other universities which cover many questions including arguments, style, organization and plagiarism.

WHY SHOULD YOU GIVE CREDIT TO THE WORK OF OTHERS? In pursuits of the mind, all of us depend on the kindness of others. If somebody helps you with ideas, it is right and good to let your readers know. Citing the work of others is intrinsically good. It gives credibility to your thoughts, helps you recognize what you have learned, puts your voice in conversation with others, and provides a public service to others who are seeking the same information you have found. There are several great online discussions of reasons for citing. Among the better ones are those posted at other major universities and linked below. And why steal something that is already free? The only cost for using somebody else's ideas is that you must give the author(s) appropriate credit, and that is easy to do.

WHEN SHOULD YOU GIVE CREDIT? Whenever you possibly can. Please simply follow the adage: “when in doubt, cite"(Princeton University 2011). The previous sentence is a case in point. The quotation came from the website of Princeton University, and you will therefore find it in the Works Cited section below. Here are two basic rules that prevent all accidental plagiarism:

Remember that not all sources are created equal. The best sources, by far, are those who know what they are talking about and face consequences if they make a mistake: academics and journalists who have reputations to protect, organizations that depend on the trust of their readers and clients, governments that can be thrown out of office if they lie. If a source has nothing to lose, it probably is not worth citing. This almost always rules out sources whose authors are difficult to identify or intentionally anonymous. See below for a link of Wayne State’s electronic journals and the library’s carefully-curated page for our specific course. Our librarians will also make time to meet with you to work on your papers and all you have to do is ask. See the request form below.

Brief Thoughts on Wikipedia: Use it! But use it in the right way. Wikipedia is an interesting case about the problems with authors having "nothing to lose." It is a /magnificent/ achievement of human cooperation, but because its authorship is never clear (the author could be you) and because its authors have nothing to lose, Wikipedia is not a source you can cite in a paper. But it is an invaluable source in finding information and sources that you /can/ cite. By all means start your research with Wikipedia. Just don’t /end/ there. Use Wikipedia and other search efforts to help you find other reliable information whose sources are worthy of a high level of trust.

This course requires use of an in-text/parenthetical citation format. Specific questions about format can be found in the small-section syllabuses distributed by each senior lecturer. One excellent standard which has worked well for students is the Modern Language Association (MLA) format used in this document. Several universities have published helpful guides to MLA including the links below. The important thing is to provide all relevant information and do so consistently all the way through your assignment.

You can be physically present but virtually absent. In your phone, your laptop and your tablet you now carry the entire world. We want you to explore that world but not while teachers or students are talking. For that reason, we’ve made the decision to insist on paper-and-pen(cil) based note-taking and to ask you gently but firmly to put away all electronic devices (laptops, tablets, phones, smart-watches) in whatever zipped or closed backpack or bag you might have. There may be some circumstances in which we will make use of laptops or tablets, but we will announce those moments well ahead of time. When in doubt, keep your devices turned off and put away beyond the reach of unconscious habit.

Brief Thoughts on the Science Behind Limiting Use of Electronics: A moratorium on electronic devices closely conforms to the research findings of scientific research which suggests that electronic note-taking gets in the way of learning in two ways: not only do electronic devices present you with the constant opportunity for distraction, but they also appear to encourage a “transcription” style of note-taking that diminishes learning and memory. Recent peer-reviewed research (Mueller and Oppenheimer 2014) shows that the slower and clumsier method of written notes actually helps you understand and remember by forcing you to reshape course material into concepts that fit better in your own context: since you can’t write everything down, your brain tries to figure out clearer, shorter ways to express the ideas and this is the very process of learning that the class is trying to promote.

Attendance rules apply to those meetings. Without the opportunity for weekly in-person contact, it is especially important that you let your senior lecturer know right away if there are any problems that might affect your attendance, either overall or for specific class periods.

We will excuse a small number of non-emergency absences but only if you provide written or email notification at least one week before the planned absence. In such cases we may ask you to submit work ahead of the deadline. Emergency absences are excused only on the basis of unexpected trauma or loss, and we reserve the right to ask for written documentation in such cases (while understanding that such requests require sensitivity). Specific questions about attendance can be found in the small-section syllabuses distributed by your own senior lecturer.

Because of the extraordinary variety of religious affiliations of the University student body and staff, the Academic Calendar makes no provisions for religious holidays. However, it is University policy to respect the faith and religious obligations of the individual. Students with classes or examinations that conflict with their religious observances are expected to notify their instructors well in advance so that mutually agreeable alternatives may be worked out.

You must let your instructor know before you make audio or video recordings of any part of the class. The university has specific policies about recording classes and your fellow students deserve a degree of privacy. Students need prior written permission from the instructor before recording any portion of this class. If permission is granted, the audio and/or video recording is to be used only for the student’s personal instructional use. Such recordings are not intended for a wider public audience, such as postings to the internet or sharing with others. Students registered with Student Disabilities Services (SDS) who wish to record class materials must present their specific accommodation to the instructor, who will subsequently comply with the request unless there is some specific reason why s/he cannot, such as discussion of confidential or protected information.

In the first two weeks of the (full) term, students can drop this class and receive 100% tuition and course fee cancellation. After the end of the second week there is no tuition or fee cancellation. Students who wish to withdraw from the class can initiate a withdrawal request on Academica. You will receive a transcript notation of WP (passing), WF (failing), or WN (no graded work) at the time of withdrawal. No withdrawals can be initiated after the end of the tenth week. Students enrolled in the 10th week and beyond will receive a grade. Because withdrawing from courses may have negative academic and financial consequences, students considering course withdrawal should make sure they fully understand all the consequences before taking this step. More information on this can be found at the link below.
